12/15/17 Update

I’ve owned the Uniden BCD536HP for almost 3 years, purchased the DMR upgrade and enjoying it ever since. I did have the RTC issue and finally decided to send it in for repair about a week ago; I’m surprised they accepted it after so long. Thank you, Uniden!
I picked up a Whistler TRX-2 about 2 weeks ago and can say the BCD536HP was the better choice thus far. Once I get my BCD536HP back then I’ll have time to use them simultaneously more.

BCD536HP
• Screen is larger and displays more details about target; has 32 larger font characters across another 4 for HOLD status.
• Boots up much faster than the TRX-2, even with the RTC error asking me to reset the clock and letting it time out. Starts scanning 16 seconds after turning knob to power on after RTC repair.
• Speaker is louder; listening to people I talk with locally on Ham bands and has natural sounding audio.
• GPS scanning capability for those interested although I haven’t purchased or used the unit.
• Support for third-party software like ARC536.
• It’s about $10 cheaper; HRO has it for an additional $5 less today.
• The Sentinel programming software is basic and not as polished as Whistler’s; need to manually find updates to it on their website.

TRX-2
• The Digital Trunking Scanner Programming System is more polished than Uniden’s and makes it easier to upgrade all components from a single interface.
• The ability to store different configurations via V-scanner is a nice function.
• The NXDN system upgrade was offered for free.
• Speaker isn''t as loud and listening to people I talk with locally on Ham bands, sounds hollow.
• Feels like a tin can and the detachable head (something I don''t care for) feels light and cheap; even the mount is thin.
• Screen is small and belongs on a handheld, not mobile/desktop scanner; has 16 characters across with smaller font.
• The supplied Whistler USB cable is way too short unless you''re using a notebook on the same desk as the scanner.
• Only two of five white keys have lights and all other keys don''t appear to have any lights behind them.
• Noticed backlighting display flickering and reported by others as well.
• Scanning shows top level lists instead of actual targets names.
• Paging system intermod on 2m Ham and 150-160MHz bands but not present on BCD536HP, receivers, SDRs or Ham gear.
• Too easy to accidentally edit config since clicking on something will automatically save config.
• Copying initial Library was extremely slow and stuck at 42%; clicking in the window appeared to wake it up as it looked like it was freezing. The same cable used with the BCD536HP updates the database much faster.
• Starts scanning 3 minutes and 7 seconds after holding button (for about 3 seconds) to power on.
• Every time you go into the Menu and back out, the lists reload again and you have to wait!
• No third-party software support.

First a word of caution: Please be aware that many of the reviews on this page are not for the BCD536HP. Many are for older models of Uniden scanners that have very little in common with the BCD536HP. Why these reviews are here I do not know, but they are.

Now for my review.
This is a great scanner, easily the best I''ve ever owned, and I have owned quite a few dating all the way back to the 1970''s. That being said, I will also say it''s easily the most maligned piece of electronic equipment I''ve ever heard of, and that reputation is not entirely unwarranted. This scanner debuted in early 2014 with early adopters finding a number of problems, including defective headphone jacks, and problems with SD cards becoming corrupted. Uniden made good on the headphone jack issue and repaired or replaced the affected units that were returned. The SD card issue seems to be hit or miss, but many who have had the problem have reported that replacing the SD card that came with the scanner with a new one has helped or eliminated the problem entirely. More recently some users have reported that the LCD backlight has dimmed over time. This is worrying, and I find myself trying to use the radio with the backlight either off, or set to its dimmest setting in order to preserve the life of the backlight. Again, this may be an issue that affects some units and not others, but I don’t want to find out the hard way. Another worrying issue is the clock battery. Some have reported their clock battery going dead after a period of months and have been unable to recharge it, or get it to hold a charge. If the clock battery is dead, the radio will require you to enter the date and time each time you turn it on, so while this doesn’t kill the radio it will suck some of the fun out of it. And then of course it took Uniden a year to finally release the Siren app for iPhone, something that was touted as a major new feature when the radio was released.
OK, so all that stuff sounds bad, and it is, but I still think this is a great radio. The Siren app is out now and mostly works, at least within your home WIFI network. The headphone jack on my radio is fine. I’ve re-programmed the radio multiple times and had no card failures (I’m using a 32GB card I bought new, keeping the supplied card as a backup.) My clock works fine. The Uniden Sentinel software that comes free is bare-bones but usable. It updates the radio’s firmware easily. The radio scans quickly, it’s UHF and VHF sensitivity is better than I expected it would be based on user comments I’d read. The radio looks and sounds great! It does not look like the “Pinto” of police scanners, which let’s face it, it kind of is. it looks more like a BMW. Very nice fit and finish, very nice design. The feel to the controls is nice & solid, and the very nice display offers more characters to use for your Alpha Tags than ever before. It’s really a wonderful, even refined, radio. I would easily give it 5 stars if it weren’t for all the design and quality control issues that have plagued it, at least did in the past.
Now I will say I think a lot of folks will be disappointed in the “Home Patrol” aspect of this radio. Yes it’s touted as a major feature, and yes you can enter your Zip Code and be scanning your local police and fire in minutes. But what I’ve found is it tends to load up a lot of stuff you will not enjoy listening to, which forces the scanner to work its way through a lot of unnecessary channels, slowing the scan cycle way down. Yes, you can hit “Avoid” on stuff, and yes you can select only the types of communications you’re interested in. All that will help, but scanners work best when you PROGRAM THEM. When YOU put in exactly what YOU want to listen to. So my advice is to take the time to learn how to program the radio properly with Sentinel, or with the Butel software (a subscription at radio reference will help if you use Butel). You will enjoy your radio infinitley more when its set up properly. If this is your first scanner, and you live in an area with complex communications systems, you should expect that learning how to program it is going to take some time and effort. It will be time well spent though, and there’s lots of resources online to help. The Marks Easier To Read manual online is a good place to start. Also RadioReference.com is a huge compendium of help and information and informative users.
Hope that helps.

I find this scanner difficult to use. The setup is supposed to be simple. You enter your zip code or GPS lat/long coordinates, punch in the distance radius and set the date/time. The scanner consistently wanted to scan counties well outside my area and the radius set. The menus aren''t intuitive but the manual is reasonably good.

The real problem is that there is a known issue with the display. My display went blank (white backlit with no text) after setting the scanner up. The company''s web page is a twiki-based page that my antivirus software (Bitdefender) automatically blocks and warns me that it is unsafe. After whitelisting the page, you realize that the company then points you to the RadioReference forums or Yahoo forums. All of these are user-based. The support page is an early 90''s looking website. This isn''t acceptable for a top dollar scanner. There are better units out there!

The forums all point to the known problems with this scanner. The display tends to go dim or go completely blank. The fixes out there include replacing the microSD card but you have to really dig to find the posts for fixing the problems. Most everyone sends the unit back for repair.

Confession: I''m BRAND NEW to the scanner hobby.
There, now that that''s out of the way.
The 536HP is an absolute TOP OF THE LINE product! After spending quite a bit of time learning how this darn thing really works, the results are pretty darn amazing. Initially I was quite frustrated at the lack of channels that I could listen to in my immediate area even though I live in a major metropolitan area. A little research helped considerably so I purchased a much better antenna, placed it outside, spent a few hours reading over the manual and watching some youtube videos and actually found some listenable local channels. Spent some more time researching and learned some of the actual features of this scanner and how they work. There are an AMAZING amount of things that can be done with this scanner.

If I had to do it again, I would start by doing more research, especially about antennas and proper placement for better reception.
This is an unbelievably powerful scanner that quite honestly, with the right antenna, is plug and play right out of the box.

FWIW I live in an Apartment with a lot of RF interference. After putting a decent antenna outside it really opened up the reception for me.

I can understand the reviews that say that this is a complicated scanner and agree to a point. I''ve spent quite a few hours getting this thing to where I understand it.

Works Great:I have had this for 3 months without a glitch. If you need to listen to a Motorola or Harris P25 public safety system this is the best way to go for most people. Previously I was using a Motorola Spectra to listen to this system in analog mode (I have skills). But the county switched to P25 and shut me out. So this Christmas after a long delay I treated myself to a BCD536HP.

Pros:
Very sensitive receiver Receives analog and P25 digital and capable to upgrade the common digital modes Provoice and DMR at small cost.
Small, well appointed controls, WiFi connectivity for Android and IOS. Powerful audio (when used with an external speaker)
Easy to upgrade firmware and channels using Sentinel.

Cons;
You will have to get latest firmware and channels using Sentinel to get started. Not hard to do, it requires a PC and a USB cable (supplied).
Ditch the internal speaker, plug in an external communications speaker 3 or 4 inch diameter.

Getting Started
Programming can be somewhat frustrating for the newbie. I am used to programming commercial LMR radios and understand all the parameters. So I would say I am "expert", however this experience turns out to be unneeded and perhaps misleads me.

This radio is quite different in that Sentinel will download a fire hose full of nationwide channels. Your radio will require you to provide your Zip code (or connect optional GPS) and it will activate all the systems in a radius you provide. This will probably be way more than you need. The solution is to use Sentinel to create a Favorites List and use Quick Keys to activate only the channels or systems you wish. Otherwise you will spend a lot of time pressing the Avoid Button to ignore the dog catcher (no kidding). The database comes FREE from www.Radioreference.com Visit that site, the forums etc, and learn about the system you wish to monitor.

Simulcast Systems
You will hear a lot of favorable and unfavorable things about this receiver. The largest complaint is the reception of P25 simulcast systems. It is true that the scanners available today (Both Uniden and Whistler) use a "discriminator" to decode the P25 signal. This is not the best way to decode P25 in a simulcast system. The best way is a DSP receiver, and you can only obtain that by buying a Motorola, Harris radio (which you cannot legally program properly), a Pricey Unification Pager, or set up a software defined radio (for geeks). Personally my experience is that my radio works fine on my local simulcast system and I am in an overlap area. Occasionally the bit error rate is high and the audio garbles. P25 itself is not a perfect mode and you will find dispatchers and officers sound like the have marbles in their mouths. It is the nature of P25. If you have any concerns contact local users and ask them their experience with this scanner in your area.

Encryption
If your local agency uses encryption on some or all of their talk groups you will NOT be able to decode them. The radio lacks an encryption card and even if equipped you would NEVER be able to obtain the lengthy 256 bit key. It would be illegal as well.

If I haven''t scared you off, you will be very pleased after you get it up and running. Uniden also makes a portable version of this radio, the BCD436HP. I bought the mobile/base version as then I do not have to worry about batteries and the BCD536HP has better shielding and so receives with less noise.

I love how easy it is to program this scanner by simply entering your zip code, but that may also overwhelm you with channels you don''t care that much about which causes it to take much longer to scan through all the channels and you can easily miss parts of a conversation or updates about an event. So, you''ll still have to learn how to go through your channel list and block out the ones you don''t want so you don''t miss the important things you do want to hear (such as police band or fire and rescue traffic only). Otherwise you may hear the dispatch say something, then it takes so long to get back around to that channel again and you missed the response.

My other major dislike about this scanner is it has no auto volume control feature. You set the volume to a normal level and then you have these very loud female dispatchers come on and blow you out of the room. You turn it down so it doesn''t disturb everyone in the house and you can''t hear anyone else. The extreme difference in volume levels during the same conversations on the same channels is more than annoying and a very good reason not to buy this scanner, it gets old very fast, especially at night when other people in your house may be trying to sleep.

Almost everything out there in the market these days, tv''s, stereos, etc has a very simple feature known as auto volume control or auto leveling for the audio output stage so your volume level will stay fairly consistent as you switch channels or input sources, and it''s usually enabled by default. I thought maybe I turned it off accidently somehow but after looking through a lot of the forums this seems to be a very common complaint with most of these scanners, the feature simply isn''t there, and the company doesn''t seem to care much about fixing the problem. It''s hard for me to believe a scanner so technically advanced would not have this very basic and much needed feature, but do consider this before making a purchase. The only fix I''ve found so far is to route the output audio of this scanner thru another (extra cost over the $500 you are spending) device that does control the audio output level and make it consistent. Overall, if you can live with the extreme volume level differences, then this isn''t a bad scanner, but there are other brands out there that work just as well and don''t have that type of ongoing unresolved issue.

One last thing I''ll say... you''ll be paying a whole lot for this scanner versus the price of an analog scanner or even digital scanners from some other companies. It''s nice that they have released a product that is usable now, and has a builtin feature to upgrade the firmware as they continue to work on it, but in reality the software is an unfinished product and you''ll have to pay dearly to get the other features added to your scanner as they complete them. I thought I was paying a lot for a well supported product but right after I spent my money on this I learned there are a few updates available for it but I''ll have to pay even more to get those. Thought I did all my research on scanners before making this purchase, but knowing what I do now, I think the choice would have been the other one I was looking at instead. For reference previous scanners owned were a Radio Shack Pro Base Station (still have), 2 Bearcat Mobile (still have 1), 3 Bearcat Handhelds (still have 1).

It is a great scanner. I bought it in June of 2017 as an upgrade from my old scanner. Now it is two years later and I can say: the Sentinel software which was updated four months ago is pretty good but could still use improvement. The Siren app on my iPhone is ONLY good for listening and viewing call information from the scanner within the bounds of my home WiFi, but it has not been updated in four years. The 536 WiFi is hard to setup as you must enter your WiFi password via twisting the front knob around to select letters and numbers, and then it takes several retries of the same process to get it to stay set. The radio is prone to dropping it''s connection to the WiFi network, it shows as still being on the network router but no longer responds to port scans which means you must go to the radio and turn it off then on again before it will work on the network again. There is a steep learning curve in using the front panel to switch modes etc. I really doubt we will ever see an update to this radio''s firmware as a new model scanner has replaced this one and as many may realize that all new effort will be targeted towards the new radio. That said, some changes to the new radios may trickle down to the older model''s firmware, phone app and software.

Once I finally figured out the process for setting up my favourites, I am enjoying this scanner.

A whole new learning slope from earlier models in programming but slow and easy read the on line manual easier on your eyes. I can walk around the house out the back ya and never lose the scanners Wi-Fi signal on the street 1000 feet maximum. New words to look out for no more lock out of channels it is now temporary AVOID or permanent AVOID. Highly recommended 10 thumbs up excellent work Uniden.

A very nice product that’s easy to program and install

Both of these work like a charm. I will be purchasing 2 more in the near future and highly recommend them to anyone looking. Very easy to program and install in my vehicle.
